Well, what did you think I looked like?

Well, what did you think I looked like?
It was a late night!

I am NOT at student today....

..........I should be, but I can't be arsed. I have one more sample paper to send in before doing my peer- review but I simply cannot study today, today I am a cleaner!!!

Yeah I know, I know.....so not usual for me. I despise cleaning in all its forms, the Gods alone know how I will manage when the boys leave home; cos they do most of it, but the kitchen cupboards have reached a state of ground zero and I have finally lost patience. Son#1 has been banned from doing the wiping up and putting away because he neither knows nor could care where everything goes, and I cant find anything I need when I cook.
So he has been banished to permanently washing up and Son#2 has been promoted to putting away cos he DOES know where I like everything and as my sous chef is as obsessed as I am with the positioning of utensils for ease of access.

Dinner was so delicious last night that we have resurrected the plan we used to follow of having a proper dinner party for the 3 of us once a month, where we cook and eat a 3 course meal; one component of which tries to be something we have never tasted before.
Meanwhile daily, Connor and I will be getting back to cooking decent fresh meals. I cannot wait for the vegetables to start coming in from the allotment; today we brought home two massive pak choi, delicious! i am so proud of the ones we have grown this year compared to the disastrous slug infested ones we grew in the back garden last year.

I fell asleep 5 minutes before the end of 'Going Postal' last night, so tired after no sleep the night before; so I will have to watch it all again this afternoon to catch up before the second half tonight...GLEE.
I did wake up enough to watch a re-run of 'Billy Elliot' though, cracking film.I had a hard time explaining the miners strike etc. to the boys though, they found it all a bit hard to believe.

Tonight's dinner is another one from my head, I hope it will be as successful as last nights. We are having
Leeks, wrapped in oak smoked, dry cured ham; covered in cheese sauce and baked in the oven, served with sweet potato roasted in butter and swede and potato mash with dill and cream.

we will also be starting to plan the weekly recipe list as that will make shopping a lot easier than yesterdays attempt, in which buying a few veg turned into a marathon spend up which I couldn't afford; including a new pan set which marks and spencers dared to have on sale the week I had no spare cash!!!! stainless steel with glass lids and not a speck of non-stick in sight. I had to, honestly, HAD TO get them, even son#1 agreed that the over spend was justified; despite meaning beans on toast and omelettes etc. for the rest of the week. So we trundled off to Tesco and Iceland ( gods I love Iceland, cheap food good value and no additives/gm tra la!!!) and spent yet MORE money buying enough veg and chicken and eggs to last till the weekend without having to eat crap.

Sunday 30 May 2010

Nice afternoon as a Cordon bleu chef!!!

I know, its a recurring fantasy of mine. All it takes is a good film about cookery....or with cooking in it, and I am away with the sauce fairies.
So, there I was the other night watching 'Julie&Julia'; and I once again imagine I am a 5 star chef, which for my eldest is a hard row to mow; he is a fussy beggar. Son #2 however fancies himself as somewhat of a gourmand, so is a willing sous chef/washer-upper.
So we had breakfast....for dinner.

bacon, eggs; mushrooms, tomatoes and a fried slice.

OR
a large slice of tiger bread sautéed in butter, topped with chopped tomatoes and greek basil; two slices of dry fried bacon on top, then add a (proper) poached egg; top off with mushrooms in red wine & cream sauce.
Fekkin delicious, move over Mrs Beeton.
and all eaten and washed up in time for ...ta da !!!! 'Going Postal'.

why do we do it?

..Blogging that is.
I have to say, this has to be probably my 5th attempt at a blog; and as I start again from scratch after another sleepless night, in the back of my mind I am wondering yet again; 'why do I bother?'.
So far, I have been unable to maintain the interest or discipline to continue for longer than a few weeks; and in some cases a few posts, be it because I simply forgot; got bored, or refused to believe anyone could be interested in my inane ramblings and saw blogging as somewhat narcissistic!
Sometimes I have started a blog to catalogue a project, but this is always dangerous in my case, as my projects are often short lived; always have been. I am a butterfly minded, jack-of-all trades; master of nothing, plagued by lack of talent; lack of direction and lack of motivation. Any minor talents I may have, have over the years been reduced to 'hobbies' instead of being developed into useful career goals; and 15 years of single-motherhood and unemployment has drained any modicum of self confidence I may have initially owned.
And so to the title of the blog...'who am I today?'....... well this is a question I ask myself every morning as I open my eyes and prepare to start the day.

Fave Author T.Pratchett's adaptation of 'Going Postal' is on Sky1 tonight 6pm, been looking forward to this one as 'Going Postal' and 'Making Money' are firm favourites, gotta love a book with a character called 'Moist Van Lipwig'.
Of course this will mean I will have to re-read the book, again despite re-reading it a few weeks ago to re-familiarise myself with the plot line, as if I needed to re-familiarise myself with a book I have read upwards of 20 times at least, I may have to be Adora Belle Dearheart today, even though i feel more like acting postmaster Groat after a sleepless night again.
